A two-way communication device, find out whose outside your home without opening the front door, answer the door remotely through your smart device and see whose been visiting your home when you’re not there.

You can read more on what is a home intercom system and its benefits here.

They’re an exciting and useful system to add to your home, but how exactly do they work? Keep reading because we’ve got it covered.

How Does it Work?

There are various types of home intercom systems, each with different set-ups, power sources and features. However, the overall concept is the same, which is to allow a person speaking into a microphone or in front of a camera, to be heard and/or seen by another person in a different room or on a smart device.

Home Intercom Components

A home intercom system is made up of several components including a base station, which is the central control point of the home intercom system. This can be a physical device or a smart app accessible via a smart device and stored in the cloud. Other components include the intercom stations which contain a camera and microphone to allow for two-way communication. This is the part of the intercom that is usually placed outside your front door, gate or whenever you receive your visitors. Another intercom station may be placed inside your home so that you can communicate with any visitors and allow them access to your home, however some systems now allow you to do this from your smart device allowing for total remote management of your home intercom and visitors.

Home Intercom System Communication

To hear or see the visitor on the other side of the door, the intercom stations will transmit the voice and/or video image data via wires or wirelessly (over a wifi connection) via the base station, to the other receiving intercom station.

Locking System Integration

If your home intercom system is integrated with your locking mechanism system, then you will have the ability to open gates and doors for your visitors from the push of a button or a tap on a smart device. This works by triggering an electronic relay inside of the intercom at your home’s entrance, which sends a signal to the door or gate releasing mechanism, thus unlocking the entryway.
